What you need to know...

Portable Appliance Testing or PAT Testing is the process of checking electrical appliances for safety through a series of visual inspections and electronic tests.

The best way of ensuring that your appliances are safe is to have a Portable Appliance Test (PAT) carried out on them by a competent person.

There are two main Categories of test that take place: Visual & a physical Tester Check.

Here’s what we are looking for:-

Visual Checks:
Exposed or damaged cables.
Loose wiring.
Cable size inappropriate for load.
Poor location for intended use. (E.g. Non IP Rated panel heater in bathroom).
Missing parts.
Lack of maintenance.

Tester Checks:
Poor or lack of earth continuity on a Class 1 piece of equipment (e.g. a metal Kettle).
Insulation Resistance Fail (Suggests exposed wiring within cable between earth and live and/or neutral).
General Failure under load.
Non-working item.

Labels
Every piece of equipment that is tested will receiver either a PASS or FAIL Sticker.
Each sticker will have an asset ID assigned to it as well as the date it was tested. It is important that you leave these stickers in place.
The current PAT Testing Regulations stipulate that a ‘Re-test date’ should not be listed on the sticker. In most circumstances, a a yearly re-test of items is suggested however this will be risk assessed and our findings will be included in your final results list.

Results
Following our PAT Testing of your appliances, you will be issued with a breakdown of tested appliances and the results. Where possible, we will break these down by exact location. e.g. Break Room, Toilets, Kitchen etc. This will be sent to you an email in PDF format as standard. (Hard copies can be provided but may be subject to a small charge for printing).

Quite simply: No.
However, the law simply requires an employer to ensure that their electrical equipment is maintained in order to prevent danger. It does not say how this should be done or how often however, PAT Testing completed by a competent person is a good way of ensuring your equipment is safe to use.

Your insurer may also request your equipment is regularly PAT Tested and require a certificate to prove that this is the case.

The frequency of inspection and testing depends upon the type of equipment and the environment it is used in. For example, a power tool used on a construction site should be examined more frequently than a lamp in a hotel bedroom.

Drop us a line today and we’ll be more than happy to advise you on all your appliance testing needs.

If an item fails a PAT Test at either the visual or testing stage then a red FAIL sticker will be applied to the appliance (Usually at the plug or cable inlet area). This marks this appliance as a failure and should no longer be used. Simply using this equipment and disregarding the Failure sticker may result in electric shock, fire, significant injury and possibly death.

In some instances, it may be possible to repair your items. We will advise you if we think this is possible/achievable. If we find a loose connection upon Visual Inspection and determine that it can be reconnected then we will before proceeding with our final tests. This will be completed FREE of charge.

There are a number of reasons that an appliance may Fail a PAT Test.
